Capturing only the region you need keeps screenshots focused and saves you from cropping afterward. Here’s how to select an area on each platform.
Windows
Press Win + Shift + S, choose the rectangular snip, and drag over the area. It’s copied to the clipboard and offered for markup. See all Windows shortcuts for the rest.
Mac
Press Cmd + Shift + 4 and drag the crosshair over the region. Hold Space to reposition, Shift to lock an edge. More in screenshots on a Mac.
In the browser (any OS)
For web pages, a browser extension gives you a consistent “draw a box” experience that doesn’t depend on the operating system. With Screeniti:
- Click the Screeniti icon and choose Select area (or press the hotkey).
- Draw a rectangle over the part of the page you want.
- Release to capture exactly that region. Press Esc to cancel.
- Add a note, download, or publish a link.
Tips for a clean region capture
- Zoom the page (Ctrl/Cmd +) before capturing if you need more detail.
- Leave a little margin around the subject — easier to read than an edge-to-edge crop.
- Need the whole page instead? See full-page screenshots.
